3 Steps to Find Inner Peace in Stressful Times

There is no doubt that the world we live in today can be highly stressful. Keeping up with the times by watching the news or scrolling through social media is enough to generate mass amounts of stress within the collective. Through our screens, many of us see a world in chaos and destruction. A question many have been asking is how do I find peace in these stressful times? Believe it or not, inner peace is possible in this crazy world we call home with these 3 steps.

1. Acceptance

The first step to find inner peace in stressful times is acceptance. When we refuse to accept the truth we create resistance within ourselves. We fight an inner battle within ourselves constantly in order to avoid facing the harsh truth of reality. We must learn to accept ourselves, our present situation, and world events that we cannot control. 

We have to allow ourselves to take our hands off the wheel and release the need to control every single outcome of every single situation. When we take a step back and accept our current circumstances, we bring an end to our inner battles, conflict, and war, which brings us one step closer to inner peace.

The main truth we must accept is that we cannot control when something stressful happens to us. We can only control the way we respond to it. 

The great thing about learning how to control your response to stressful situations is that you begin to see opportunities within them to learn and grow.

Take for example being let go from a job due to circumstances completely out of your control. If you do not accept the situation at hand, you will get stuck in the past. You’ll be angry with your boss or with yourself for letting it happen, or you will be sad because you loved your job and no longer get to look forward to going into work. This can keep you from moving on and finding another job that may be better suited for you.

On the other hand, if you accept the fact that you were let go, you will be able to focus your attention completely on your next move. You can formulate a plan and begin taking steps to finding something new. You’ll be able to look back at what happened with your old job and figure out what happened, why it happened, and what you can do to avoid it in the future.

2. Mindfulness

Many of us are walking around seemingly existing in the present moment, yet our minds are stuck living in the past or worrying about the future. One of the best practices that we can incorporate to find inner peace in stressful times is mindfulness. 

According to a study published in April 2013, mindful meditation was proven to help those who struggled with habitual worrying deal with stressful situations in a healthier way. By focusing their minds on the immediate experiences in the present moment and having an “attitude of acceptance” towards whatever arrived in their stream of consciousness, their anxiety levels decreased.    

When we bring our minds to the present moment, we are able to find inner peace that exists within the eternal now. We cannot alter the past or control what happens in the future, but we can choose in every moment to find that place deep inside of ourselves that is safe and peaceful.

3. Forgiveness

Forgiveness is an act that seems simple and unimportant on the surface when discussing how to find inner peace in stressful times. However, when you begin to seriously practice radical forgiveness, you will soon find that it is one of the most difficult and one of the most important acts that you will ever do in your life.

If you think this is an exaggeration, think again.

Scientists have been able to reverse engineer the brainwave patterns of monks who have been practicing meditation for 40+ years. With a process called Neurofeedback, they are able to entrain your brain to have the same brainwave patterns as these monks in just a few hours per day for five days. 

During the process, the main thing the scientists want you to focus on as your head is attached to the 24 channel eeg machine, is forgiveness. 

Forgive everyone that has ever hurt you. Forgive your family, your children, and your friends. Forgive yourself for being an imperfect human and making mistakes. Forgive the world for the chaos and stress that is out of your control.

Forgiveness is not itself enough, however. You must be able to turn that forgiveness into love. You must be able to picture the person who hurt you, forgive them, and embrace them in love, in empathy, and in understanding.

Forgiveness is not for the weak. Only the strongest people are able to embark on a journey of forgiveness. However, the reward is as sweet as the road is difficult. 

What forgiveness does is free us from the shackles of the past. 

This allows us the ability to find inner peace without past hurt, pain, shame, or resentment keeping us as prisoners and holding us back from fully accepting happiness into our lives. 

Making the conscious decision to incorporate acceptance, mindfulness, and forgiveness into your life so that you can find inner peace is a daily practice.

Finding inner peace is a process that can take anywhere from a few days to a few years to fully attain. Along the way, it requires patience and self-compassion.

An amazing way to begin is by creating a morning routine centered in these three practices. This way, you begin every single day with a fresh mindset and a reminder to find inner peace in stressful times.
